Here’s a picture of my youngest son, Kellen. We often refer to him as “K-Bear”…
That’s him lying in his bed around 5am, today.
Early this morning, I was planning out some things for my business, when all of a sudden I heard the little pitter patter of footsteps upstairs. Since it was super early, I went upstairs to see which of my 2 young sons (I also have 2 teenage boys) was roaming the house… and why.
Turns out that Kellen had woke himself up with a nasty cough and needed a drink, so after getting him to use the restroom, first, I carried him downstairs to get him a drink of fresh water from our water cooler.
Now… have you ever been so focused on your business, that it is all you can think about? This morning is one of those times for me. Let me explain…
So, anyway, I’m carrying Kellen down the stairs, and by the time I get to the kitchen, I’m already thinking about the new blog posts I want to write, the new webinar I’m planning, and so forth.
We get to the water cooler, I fill up a tall glass full of water, I take a big drink, I set the glass down, and head for the stairs. I get halfway up the stairs, and K-Bear asks…
“Where’s my water, Daddy?”
(Actually, it sounded more like “Wells my waddle, Daddy?”)
So, I’m like OOPS, and I head back down to get him a drink of water, and head back upstairs.
By the time I get back upstairs, once again I’m thinking about my blog readers and all the stuff I have planned, and instead of taking him back to his bed, I go into my bedroom, turn on the light, and my wife wakes from her slumber and just looks at me as if to say…
“What the ____ are you doing?” (insert your own term)
OOPS!… My bad. Once again I was so focused on business that I had LOST FOCUS ON MY FAMILY.
After finally getting Kellen back to bed, I couldn’t help but think about how easy it can be for us, as entrepreneurs, to inadvertently lose focus on what matters the most in this world… our families & other relationships.
Especially right now, during the Holidays, we all need to take a step back and truly analyze what we’re focusing on the majority of the time.
Obviously, our businesses require tons of focus, but the Holidays are an ideal time to re-evaluate our “reason why” we do what we do, and to spend quality time with our loved ones.
By now, you may already be familiar with the concept of having a “reason why”, but in case this is new to you, it all comes down to deciding what your overall reason is for getting up in the morning and putting forth the effort to succeed in life.
Without a doubt, my reason why is to provide a good life for my wife & kids, as well as to help encourage my parents, brother, friends, and other family members to never give up on their dreams.
This is also a perfect time to take a step back to not only analyze what we did right or wrong over the past year, but also to dedicate ourselves to creating massive success in the coming year – and DECADE – so that we can maximize the time and experiences that we have to share with our loved ones in the future.
What is YOUR “reason why”?

Great post Andy and oh so true. As a dad with a 7, 5, and 3 yr old I can completely relate. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
My “why” is my beautiful wife and 2 month old baby boy!
My goal is to keep my wife at home where she loves to be. She is a fantastic mother and loves it soooo much.
I am super excited about the opportunities that are available to me this year.
Thanks for the post Andy!
Jason
