Run Your Affiliate Program on Clickbank

by Andy

A lot of my readers have products they’re promoting on Clickbank, and they want to know how they can maximize their results by using Clickbank’s affiliate program.

Well, here’s a related question that I got from one of my JV Attraction Formula customers that I thought you could really benefit from if you’re running an affiliate program on Clickbank, or contemplating doing so…

Question:

Andy,

Jeff and I have been going through JV Attraction Formula – very helpful…

One of the things we’re seriously contemplating is switching away from our own affiliate program (which is on the Post Affiliate Pro + Authorize.net & PayPal) and using ClickBank instead.  We have a LOT invested in our existing affiliate software and e-commerce systems; however, we feel like by being on ClickBank, we’ll be able to tap into a much larger network of affiliates to promote our stuff.

Any concerns or advice regarding us making such a switch (before we put all the work into implementing our complete affiliate training and funnel)?

Thanks
Rick

My Answer:

Hi Rick,

I’m glad you guys are getting a lot out of “JV Attraction Formula“.

I’m glad you asked this question, because I’m actually creating an infoproduct that teaches people how to set up an affiliate program that dominates on Clickbank, so this falls in line with what I’ll be teaching. It really just depends on what your main goals are, based on the following:

* Why do you want to change?
* What do you like/dislike about Post Affiliate Pro?
* Do you prefer using your own merchant account?
* Do you mind paying your own affiliates?
* How much control do you want to have with affiliate management?
* What things about Clickbank attract you the most?

Here are some advantages/disadvantages to using Clickbank…

Clickbank Advantages:

- Access to network of affiliates (but still need to make yourself known).
- They handle paying your affiliates.
- Affiliates trust them to pay their affiliate commissions on time.
- CB is a trusted name by customers.
- Don’t need a merchant account.
- No ongoing fees for their affiliate management solution (are you paying PAP monthly?).
- Can automate a lot of your Clickbank affiliate management with a sweet tool called Easy Click Mate.

Clickbank Disadvantages:

- Charge high merchant fees.
- Have to set up own system to keep track of your affiliates.
- People stealing sales by altering Clickbank affiliate links.
- Starting from scratch if moving from current processor.
- Don’t have the affiliate program flexibility that you have with PAP.
- Limited by amount you can charge, what you can do with upsells/downsells, etc.

As for Post Affiliate Pro, I think they’re a solid solution. You can do a lot with it, and once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s pretty easy to navigate their system to set it up however you like (we used it with a past client in setting up their affiliate program). I just think their support can be lacking. Last I knew, they’re not available on the weekends, and sometimes their system can be a bit clunky, but you can definitely do more with it, in terms of affiliate management, than you can with Clickbank… and I highly recommend it IF you don’t feel like you need much tech support, and you’re comfortable with their system (I am).

That said, you can still set up your own effective “JV attraction funnel” with Clickbank. You just need to be proactive in getting your affiliates on your OWN list, or else you’ll have no idea what affiliates are promoting your products. You have to, essentially, suck people into “joining” your own affiliate program, although they’re technically in Clickbank’s affiliate program… if you want to be able to stay in touch with them and motivate them to take consistent action.

One solution you may want to consider, if you’re unhappy with PAP, but still would like to host your own affiliate program, would be to use a shopping cart/affiliate solution called 1AutomationWiz… which is a private label version of 1shoppingcart. I know the owner of this system, personally, and I’m convinced that it’s perfect if you want an all-in-one solution that’s very USER-FRIENDLY. It’s what marketers like Ryan Deiss use for their affiliate programs, so that says a lot.

So decide what your main concerns are with your current system, consider what I laid out above, and then go with your gut.

Take care,
Andy

Like I mentioned in my answer, above, I’ll be releasing a product that shows you how to dominate with an affiliate program on Clickbank, so let me know if this is something you want, or not, here, and include any questions you have, and I’ll make this a killer product for you.

To Massive JV Profits,
Andy Hussong

P.S. Please share your thoughts, below, if this has been helpful.

Affiliate Disclaimer: Yes, I stand to make a commission if you purchase one of the solutions, mentioned above, so if you choose, you may find the main links to these sites rather easily online, instead, if you don’t want me being compensated for referring you to these resources. I just hope you got a lot out of the CONTENT of this post, and while affiliate commissions help to monetize my free blog, that’s really just icing on the cake, if I know that I’ve at least pointed you in the right direction.

Andy,

could you please send me Ricks’s remarks about PAP? Maybe we can improve PAP to fit his needs.

BTW: yes, in the past was support weak element of our product, but we try to be better.
Now we have support online 24 hours a day during business days to cover all time zones (yes, it is offline on weekends)
We offer next to support over mails also live chat and toll free phone support.

Thx.

Andy,

Thanks for sharing this great information and the pros/cons of using a CPA network like ClickBank vs. running your own program.

I just want to clarify something, though. We are absolutely ELATED with Post Affiliate Pro (PAP). I have used a number of different affiliate control panel scripts over the years, and by far, PAP outshines them all hands down. As far as support, PAP’s support has been stellar – both on the phone and via email.

So to be clear, PAP is one of the bright spots of our existing affiliate programs and one of the things that makes even contemplating switching to a CPA network like ClickBank so hard to ponder or even justify…

Our primary reason for wanting to use ClickBank is to tap into an existing, large (i.e., many thousands) of active affiliates. However, ClickBank’s structure is extremely primitive and inconvenient – having to create separate CB accounts for each product in order to have each product actually show up in the CB Marketplace (where your product gets market exposure). Yes, I realize you can “multiplex” multiple products on a single account using EasyClickMate or other 3rd party tools, but who really wants a single listing in ClickBank’s Marketplace if you have multiple products? (we don’t)

So, in the end, we have decided to do what most other affiliates I’ve seen do over the years – keep our existing program (and definitely PAP) and offer only selected products on ClickBank, as well – the ones that will benefit most from the scale of ClickBank’s army of affiliates.

Perhaps someday ClickBank will address their legacy issues by enabling a single account to truly support multiple products fully and properly.

Fortunately, we’re using AMember Pro as our e-commerce platform, so integrating all of these various payment processors is fairly straightforward.

Thanks again for your help and perspective. I will say this. The biggest issues we have with our affiliate program have nothing to do with the infrastructure we’re using (PAP or ClickBank). We simply have an incomplete affiliate program that lacks the training and motivation components – something we now know exactly how to correct to create a healthier, more vibrant affiliate program – due to your JV Attraction Formula, which we are very thankful for having found.

Best,
Rick

Thanks Andy, your e-mail for this post caught my eye because I’m going to be selling my own e-book next year. You gave me a lot to think about. Great post.

Grey post Andy, just a quick question, I am looking to start my own affiliate program, so far to me the main one which stands out to me is Nanacast because it does this and a whole lot more. You spoke about 1automationwiz I thought Ryan Deiss used infusionsoft for his affiliate program?
I thought into using Clickbank myself but the only problem which I seem to have come across is that if you want to have different hoplinks for your affiliates to promote your products, for example if you have more than one product then you have to either create a new account, or have to get your affiliate to send the traffic to your original hoplink page 1st which will then have all the rest of your products on that webpage. So if this is true what would you recommend to overcome this?

Thanks
Ashley

looking forward to this Andy!

Andy November 13, 2010 at 11:59 AM

Hey Matt… glad to hear it. It’s gonna rock! Hope all is well with you, buddy.

Andy November 13, 2010 at 12:07 PM

Yes Ryan’s used both Infusionsoft and 1AW. Not sure his thoughts on either solution, but he does use 1AW for ongoing promos of his. As for your Clickbank question, I’ll look into this a bit deeper for you, but I think you could possibly help that situation using a software that I discussed in this post. I’m going to hammer out answers to questions like those in my upcoming product about running a successful affiliate program via Clickbank… and I’ll be setting up a survey, soon, that allows people to any questions they might have about that.

Thanks, Lisa. :)

My apologies if my comment somehow put Post Affiliate Pro in a negative light, because I do feel they are a very SOLID affiliate software solution. In fact, Viktor was kind enough to conduct an interview with me about a year ago, as you can see on this blog post, and I wouldn’t post something that I didn’t fully believe in.

Viktor has always been there for me when I needed him, and his support has been solid ACCEPT for the fact that it was just frustrating not to have assistance over the weekend. But if you have your ducks in a row with what you’re trying to accomplish, I believe this is a minor hiccup to an otherwise stellar tool.

Leavisman November 13, 2010 at 6:49 PM

There are pros & cons to using both. This is a really confusing subject for newbies – you have to try many different processors & watch what other big names are using, when. It’s like being a craftsman – certain tools for certain operations at certain times. If anyone had told me when I started, that ‘processor choice’ would affect my strategy/earnings, I would have laughed. But it’s critical for many complex reasons- pricing, distribution, launch, etc…Smart idea launching a product on this subject!

Great Andy,

I’ll look out for your product then! Hopefully it won’t be too long :-) What are your thoughts on Nanacast by the way?

Andy November 21, 2010 at 3:11 PM

Hi Ashley… I actually don’t have any experience with Nanacast, but I’ll look into the benefits/disadvantages of using that service.
