“Toy Story 3″ – A JV & Product Launch Lesson

I want your testimonial! Let me know how I've helped you here. :-)

Finally! My wife and I were finally able to take our little ones to see the much anticipated movie, “Toy Story 3″, a couple of days ago. I think we were just as excited as they were to see it, actually.

Besides the fact that we loved the previous two releases in the series, the truth is that there were some other factors that caused us great anticipation as the release date approached.

From news releases stating the release date of the movie, to teaser commercials, to previews at the beginning of other movies, and so on, those of us in the target market of these types of movies (parents of young kids) have been conditioned and warmed up to mark the release date on our calenders.

While the following circumstance didn’t have any personal influence on our desire to watch the movie, I thought it was a very interesting example of how much the motion picture industry incorporates both (1) joint ventures and (2) product launches into their marketing strategy…

Toy Story 3 & Frosted Flakes – JV & Product Launch Strategy

I was eating a bowl of Frosted Flakes the other day (they’reeee GRRRRREAT!), and as I was sitting there looking at the box, it hit me that I was witnessing a great combination of a joint venture and product launch.

All over the box, I saw different stuff about the upcoming release (it has since hit theaters, and it dawned on me that the marketing departments for both entities joined forces to accomplish the following mutually beneficial goals…

1) Sell more Frosted Flakes.
2) Get people fired up about Toy Story 3 release.
3) Get people to the Kellogg’s web site.
4) Redeem codes for Toy Story 3 merchandise.

Part of their strategy, I’m sure, was to produce TV commercials that showed this joint venture promotion (Toy Story 3 stuff on the box) as an incentive to get people to buy Frosted Flakes cereal.

Then, after buying the cereal, parents and kids are given incentives to buy MORE cereal in order to get codes to redeem for Toy Story 3 merchandise, which all combined, leads to more people being interested in – and reminded of – the new movie release.

In our case, we just happened to buy a box of Frosted Flakes because THEY’RRRRRE GRRRREAT, but seeing all the Toy Story 3 crap slapped all over the box definitely reminded me that I couldn’t wait – uhh, I mean my KIDS couldn’t wait – for the movie’s release.

So take a page from these two entities’ implementation of joint venture and product launch strategies, and create profitable relationships that can result in some big sales of your products & services.
